Chatham County Property Tax Increase to Fund Fire Services—What Skidaway Island Residents Should Know

Residents of Skidaway Island and other parts of unincorporated Chatham County will see a change in how local fire services are funded. In a 5-4 vote, Chatham County Commissioners approved a 2-mill increase to the special service district millage rate to support the Chatham County Fire Department.

This adjustment comes in response to a recent court ruling that declared the previous fire fee an illegal tax. Rather than reinstating a separate fee, the County is incorporating the cost directly into property taxes—a move that offers a more streamlined and legally sound solution.

Under the new rate, property owners will see a modest increase—for example, $80 more per year for a $100,000 home and $160 for a $200,000 home. While the financial impact may be minimal for many Skidaway Island homeowners, the change ensures continued investment in essential fire protection and emergency services.

This update affects all residents in unincorporated Chatham County and reflects an important shift in how critical services are funded—one that supports public safety while avoiding the complications of an additional fee.
